CHARACTER NAME: Gaju Akagi
CANON & CANON POINT: Welcome to the Ballroom/Ballroom e Youkosou, Vol 8 Chapter 46
HISTORY:
  • Childhood: Gaju was an athletic, active kid involved in soccer and many other typical sports. Quite typically for his age, he was concerned with maintaining his reputation as a tough kid who wasn't into girly sports like dancing, and treated his younger sister Mako like a bit of a nuisance in public. In private, he had something of a weak spot for her requests, and when she dragged him to a dance hall and begged him to be her dance partner, he relented and began to study ballroom dancing.
  • Gaju turned out to be conscientious with his practice, and quickly began to excel at the sport, even receiving praise from at least one adult who thanked him for choosing dance despite its reputation as an unpopular sport among Japanese high school boys in particular. This praise spurred him to redouble his efforts in trying to improve himself.

At a dance competition, he caught sight of a young Shizuku about to compete, and was instantly smitten with her. From then on, the thought of what it would be like to have her as his partner occupied a growing corner of his mind. Combined with a frustration with his sister, who was shy, loath to voice her own wants, and considerably shorter and less flamboyant than Gaju himself, he began to see Shizuku as the ideal dance partner.

  • Pairing with Shizuku: Upon hearing that Shizuku's partner, Hyodo, had sustained an athletic injury and gotten disqualified from a dance competition, Gaju stormed into Shizuku's dance studio and asked to team up with her instead. Shizuku agreed, but Mako wanted to continue dancing with her brother. In an attempt to get him back, she asked another young dancer, Tatara, to help her compete with the Gaju-Shizuku pair in the Tenpei Cup competition.
  • Tenpei Cup: Gaju and Shizuku made an excellent showing during the Tenpei cup, as both were high-level dancers -- they easily ended up taking first place. During the competition, however, Mako asked Tatara to lead their dance so that Mako's own abilities could shine through. It was Mako who therefore made the greatest impression on the judges; despite Gaju's estimation of her dancing as lacking at best, she demonstrated incredible presence and skill, suggesting that Gaju's overpowering presence had actually been stifling Mako's development.
  • Gaju and Mako made up after the tournament, becoming a pair once more in order to pursue additional competitions and awards.

  • Currently: Gaju and Mako are studying at the studio of a famous professional ballroom dancer, where they undergo physical and dance training. It appears that they are trying to decide whether to specialize in Latin (Gaju's specialty) or Standard (a natural choice for Mako).

PERSONALITY: Loud, outgoing, impulsive, and hot-tempered, Gaju is an amateur ballroom dancer who has made a name for himself in the competitive dancing circuit. Though originally pressed into dancing from a young age at Mako's request, Gaju's natural athleticism and the praise he received as a child inspired him to keep going; he eventually developed a fierce competitive streak and an enjoyment of dance for his own sake. These days, Gaju alternates between life as a more-or-less ordinary high schooler and entering high-level ballroom competitions with Mako.

Gaju's fellow students regard him with a healthy sense of respect, partly due to his physicality but mostly due to his tendency to get into fights with his classmates when they rib him about his hobby. He's even been known to take a swing at fellow students with a baseball bat -- though seemingly without any lasting malice on his part. Typically, Gaju is quick to go off, but also quick to forget about a grudge; perhaps as a result of this, even the people he picks fights with don't seem to actively dislike him.

Early in the story, Gaju is consumed with the desire to improve his dancing and frustrated with his inability to communicate properly with his customary dance partner, the short, meek, soft-spoken Mako; in particular, he believes that Mako's smaller size prevents him from making the wide, sweeping moves he's capable of and that she lacks the conviction to really want to improve. He thus sets his sights on forming a pair with Shizuku, a tall, statuesque dancer that he feels 'won't hold him back' and the polar opposite of Mako. In fact, once Gaju hears that Shizuku has broken up with her own partner, he barges into her dance studio and demands that they form a pair while simultaneously ditching his younger sister. When the main character, Tatara, insists that Gaju take Mako back, Gaju is dismissive and arrogant.

It is only during the amateur Tenpei Cup that Gaju finally recognizes Mako's value as a dancer; with a partner that allows her to show off her own dancing ability instead of constantly overshadowing and intimidating her, Mako even wins a prize for the most striking female dancer in the competition. With a newfound respect for Mako, Gaju decides to take back up with his old partner. In fact, their relationship improves considerably after the cup, as Mako begins to be more assertive with what she wants instead of constantly following her brother's lead. Afterward, Gaju seems considerably happier as they rejoin the competitive circuit, though he thereafter presents a different problem to Tatara, as he is now overbearingly protective of his sister and convinced that Tatara is romantically interested in her.

Gaju is a heated individual in and out of the ballroom, a quality he channels particularly well into dances like the tango or to the Latin dances in general -- he's even been known to punch himself in the face to calm himself down. Though capable of maintaining a professional demeanor on the dance floor, he's liable to emotional outbursts when he wins (or loses), and often forgets his manners when he's getting carried away in the pursuit of some goal. All the same, he's generally good-natured and seems to enjoy pranks and barging into freshman classrooms (he's a sophomore) to eat lunch with friends.

While typically well-intentioned, Gaju can be thoughtless or inconsiderate; he'll forget to call in support of a friend or become impatient with quieter types and simply steamroll over them before they can spit out their concerns. At the same time, other characters seem to do the same right back to him (using Gaju's shirt as a towel, ignoring his waving and taking a seat several rows away). Neither situation, however, seems to bother Gaju for long, as he's generally too busy worrying about dance or his sister.

In short: off the dance floor, Gaju is open, friendly, and a little high-strung -- the kind of guy who decides you're friends and nabs your phone to add his number. On the dance floor, he's focused, competitive, and aggressive, with performances that strongly reflect his current emotional state.

Generally speaking, Gaju can be counted on to be a typical self-interested, hotheaded teenager, prone to bickering, emotional outbursts, and somewhat callously disregarding people who are quieter about their needs than he is. He values people who stick up for themselves, as well as people who are skilled in their field. He also has a tendency to be careless or forgetful with details/the sort of social niceties that might be valued by the more reserved. He does tend to get along with most people, as he's also fairly easygoing.

At the same time, Gaju can be extremely focused and detail-oriented when he applies himself, capable of channeling his frustrations and excess emotion into exacting physical performances. He's strict in his self-imposed physical training; once he finds something he loves, he's capable of devoting incredible amounts of time and effort to perfecting it. Moreover, he's learned over the years how to compose himself when necessary and cope with intense pressure. Though he certainly doesn't deal with horror themes in his everyday life, he can be adaptable when needed -- and even capable of shutting up when the situation calls for it!

Dude, what the hell. You guys have a haunted library, too?

[ Of all the problems he had right now, this was possibly the least pressing, but damn it, it was creepy and thus you were all going to hear about it. ]

I still have marks from where that stupid

[ Was he going to say ghost ]

thing pinched me! Not like a pinch me I'm dreaming pinch, either, like a great aunt I haven't seen you in a whole year deal.

[ He was trying to sound cool about this, but frankly everything was creepy and he needed to talk to someone, even if it was under the guise of bellyaching about something relatively inconsequential. ]

So what do you gotta do if you want to have a conversation around here, anyway? Light candles? Dig up some holy water? I don't know about you, but I kind of got a voice that carries.
